Coastal Challenge game session with students at the University of Catania

On 8 May 2026, a Coastal Challenge serious game session was held at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Catania. The activity was organised at the initiative of Rosaria Ester Musumeci and Massimiliano Marino and took place in both English and Italian.

More than 30 students participated in the session, including mainly bachelor’s students, as well as master’s and PhD students.

During the activity, participants worked in small teams to explore the game’s three modules and test different strategies to address coastal erosion, sea-level rise, environmental degradation, and competing land-use pressures.

By taking the role of decision-makers, they were challenged to balance environmental protection, economic development and social needs while working with limited resources and considering long-term impacts.

The activity also helped students, many of whom came from engineering backgrounds, to approach coastal management more holistically, considering the long-term balance between environmental, social and economic dimensions in decision-making processes.
