REST-COAST contributes to a new project publication on Nature-based Solutions in the Mediterranean Region

The newly published research article “Nature-based Solutions in the Mediterranean Region: A look back and moving forward” is now available in the Journal for Nature Conservation.

Developed with the involvement of REST-COAST members from Tour du Valat, along with the Mediterranean Biodiversity Consortium (MBC), the publication presents a comprehensive literature review examining how Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are understood and implemented across the Mediterranean basin. The study analyses scientific articles, guidelines and policy documents to identify key obstacles to NbS uptake and to highlight practical recommendations for overcoming them.

The research emphasises the importance of adapting Nature-based Solutions to local social and ecological contexts. It accentuates the need for strong governance, enhanced funding mechanisms, and effective communication. Furthermore, it demonstrates that interdisciplinary and participatory approaches are crucial for successful implementation. The recommendations are categorised into four areas: Governance, Funding, Integration, and Technical Aspects, guiding practitioners working in diverse Mediterranean landscapes.

The study further notes that while Mediterranean-specific NbS are still emerging in academic and scientific literature, a wide range of non-academic materials, including international guidelines and practitioner-oriented records, provide valuable insights for on-the-ground conservation and restoration projects.
