REST-COAST at ESP Europe 2024: Advancing Ecosystem Services Science for Global Challenges

28 November 2024

Ecosystem services science is pivotal in addressing sustainable development and global health challenges. It offers immense potential for fostering cross-disciplinary scientific partnerships and driving transformative change. Reflecting this mission, the 5th ESP Europe Conference took place from November 18–22, 2024, in Wageningen, The Netherlands. Organised by the Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP), the Foundation for Sustainable Development, and Wageningen University & Research, the event attracted over 500 participants from 49 European countries, the USA, Russia, and Canada.

Supporting the mission of the ESP and the slogan of this year’s conference “Ecosystem services: One planet, One Health”, REST-COAST took part at the event with a representation from consortium partners from DeltaresCMCC and Pensoft

Sara Cabacho of Deltares presented the Quick Scan Strategies Tool, developed within the REST-COAST framework, during a session on coastal ecosystem management, decision-making, and restoration. Her presentation emphasised the tool's role in advancing climate adaptation strategies for coastal regions.

In the poster session, Fabienne Horneman of CMCC highlighted her project work with a poster titled, “Exploring Transformative Climate Change Adaptation through Nature-Based Solutions for Disaster Risk Reduction in Coastal Areas.” Her research underscored the potential of nature-based solutions in fostering resilience against climate challenges.

REST-COAST’s communication leaders from Pensoft showcased the project at a shared exhibition stand alongside two other Horizon Europe projects, SELINA and SpongeBoost. Throughout the five-day event, the team engaged attendees with project materials, including Pilot Site factsheets, leaflets, and stickers, which drew significant interest.

By actively participating in the ESP Europe Conference 2024, REST-COAST reinforced its commitment to advancing ecosystem services science and promoting sustainable coastal resilience solutions.
