Illustration of embryo staggered (longitudinal) dunes constructed along the Trabucador beach (southern Ebro hemi-delta), testing the partial barrier concept, which refers to barriers that allow cross-shore transport and that restore coastal roughness. Partial barriers in narrow barrier beaches enable over-wash fluxes without preventing the back-beach growth for natural resilience.

REST-COAST with a new research publication, looking into the challenges and opportunities for restoring the Ebro Delta

29 July 2025

As part of the REST-COAST open-access collection "Restoration of Wetlands" in the Nature Conservation journal, the project has recently published a new research article "Trade-offs and synergies in river-coastal restoration for the Ebro case (Spanish Mediterranean)".

Focusing on the Ebro Delta, which is one of the Mediterranean’s most vulnerable coastal regions, the article looks into the sediment transport challenges across the river–delta–coast continuum. The REST-COAST experts, who have authored the publication, among whom are members from UPC, UPM, Pernice Collaborative, Albirem and the Reichman University, evaluate key strategies for restoring the area and address the root causes and consequences of environmental degradation.

The study is a collaborative effort under REST-COAST, aimed at advancing nature-based solutions and contributing to the sustainable management of river-coastal systems.
