REST-COAST at the One Ocean Science Congress: A Shared Approach to Coastal Resilience

13 June 2025

Held in Nice from 3–6 June 2025, the One Ocean Science Congress brought together more than 2,000 scientists from around the globe to spotlight the critical role of science in shaping the future of our Ocean. As a special event of the upcoming United Nations Ocean Conference, the congress served as a platform for sharing knowledge, building partnerships, and promoting sustainable action, with the clear message that time is of the essence.

Among the participants was the REST-COAST project, represented by project coordinator Agustin Sanchez-Arcilla of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, along with several consortium partners. They presented a framework designed to improve coastal resilience in the face of climate change. Their work focuses on combining early warning systems with long-term projections to guide proactive, adaptive management of coastlines, all while strengthening the role of nature-based solutions.

Drawing on pilot case studies across Europe, the REST-COAST team showed how science and practical restoration can go hand-in-hand. By using a mix of observations and modelling, their approach aims to maintain healthy ecosystems that reduce flooding and erosion, support biodiversity, and store carbon, benefits that are vital to both people and nature.

As highlighted by many voices throughout the congress, including local leaders and civil society, making science accessible and actionable is not optional, it is essential. REST-COAST contributes to this call, offering knowledge and tools to help decision-makers act decisively in a changing climate.
