Reviving the Green Deal: A Call for Bold Action on Climate and Biodiversity

28 November 2024

As our planet faces unprecedented environmental challenges, the European Green Deal once stood as a beacon of hope for transformative change. However, recent shifts in policy priorities threaten to undermine its potential, favouring short-term economic gains over long-term sustainability.

REST-COAST recognises that healthy ecosystems, such as coastal wetlands and deltas, are critical for climate resilience and biodiversity. These ecosystems provide natural flood protection, support fisheries, and store carbon—essential services that align with the Green Deal's objectives. Yet, weakened regulations, delays in nature restoration laws, and reduced biodiversity protections jeopardise these efforts.

This is a pivotal moment. The restoration of Europe's coasts and wetlands, as championed by projects like REST-COAST, must remain central to the EU's environmental strategy.

Hence, we call on policymakers to:

  • Reinstate ambitious goals for carbon neutrality and biodiversity conservation.

  • Support evidence-based legislation, including the Nature Restoration Law.

  • Prioritise sustainability in agriculture and renewable energy expansion to safeguard ecosystems.

A renewed commitment to the Green Deal is not just a political choice—it’s a necessity for ensuring a future where nature and society thrive together. Join us in advocating for a resilient and sustainable Europe.
