On March 10, REST-COAST took part in the high-level Stakeholder Conference on Supporting National Restoration Plan Development in Brussels. Hosted by REA, DG RTD, and the four EU-funded Green Deal projects - MERLIN, REST-COAST, SUPERB, and WaterLANDS - the event provided a platform for experts and policymakers to explore the challenges and opportunities involved in implementing National Restoration Plans (NRPs) under the Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR).
The discussions focused on several key areas, including the need to scale up impactful restoration efforts, develop feasible financing mechanisms, establish effective monitoring approaches, and enhance stakeholder engagement strategies. Throughout the event, REST-COAST underscored the urgency of large-scale coastal ecosystem restoration to address the growing threats of sea-level rise and climate-induced pressures. The project highlighted the effectiveness of nature-based solutions, which are not only more sustainable than traditional infrastructure but also more cost-efficient. Additionally, REST-COAST introduced a suite of early warning tools designed to help coastal decision-makers respond proactively to emerging threats, emphasizing the increasing importance of timely action in light of recent catastrophic environmental events.
Endorsed by the European Commission, the conference brought together insights from 71 restoration sites across Europe. As Member States work toward drafting their National Restoration Plans by September 2026, the knowledge shared by REST-COAST and its partner projects will play a crucial role in shaping effective and scalable restoration strategies that align with the latest scientific and technical advancements.
